2 mils:
Commonly used for front and rear windscreen. It prevents light diffusion (wavy effect) due to tint thickness.
4 to 7 mils:
It will NOT prevent glass from breaking, but it WILL require more force to break the window. 4 to 7 mils is commonly used for side windscreen to deter thieves from entering.

That being said, this does not prevent glass from breaking but it will stop it from shattering which can be dangerous during extreme weather.
