
The present rules allow rear windows and rear windscreen for private cars to be fully darkened.
The minimum VLT percentages are 70% for front windscreen, 50% for front side windows remains the same.
However, the rear windows and rear windscreen is allowed to be reduced below 30%, given that two side mirrors are attached to the vehicle.
The police protests against the amended rules because it is more challenging to check if passengers at the backseat are wearing safety belts.
The department most disappointed at the lack of discussion on the new policies. Despite the protests, the decision remains the same.
The new regulations allow car owners to have car window tints above the allowable limit, but they have to pay a fee.
It does not mean that anyone who wants dark films can just do so. Car owners have to apply it and up to ministry’s discretion to approve it.
If you’re looking to tint your front windscreen and side windows below the permissible VLT levels, you will need a valid security or health reason.
For each application, a service cost of RM50 will be charged.
Once a background of criminal record is checked and the application is approved, you have to pay a fee of RM5,000 for the permit to darken your windscreen and side windows below the 70% and 50% levels.
This only applies to private vehicles.
Note that the permit will only last for two years and you will need to reapply after it has expired.
